Miniatures: A Year of Painting
In my last post, I wrote about picking up new hobbies next to cosplay. One of these is miniature painting. It turned out to be an amazing match for me as it goes hand in hand with my interest in Dungeons & Dragons, 3D printing and drawing. My partner has been painting for many years, and I was lucky enough to have access to his selection of materials and knowledge to get started. In this post, I’ve put together a gallery timeline from my first project to one of my latest.
Most of the figures below are from Loot Studios. This is not sponsored, but I just really love the models they offer and would definitely recommend them to anyone with access to a 3D printer.
Even though some of the figures took me many hours to complete, there’s something immensely satisfying in focusing all of my attention on a “small” and limited project. It somehow feels more tangible compared to creating a whole costume from scratch. I’ve also found it to be quite meditative, which is good for someone like me who has a mind that is constantly racing ahead at full speed.
On multiple occasions I’ve also compared it to creating a makeup look, although on a much smaller scale. Even the brushes seem similar in shape, quality and often in price (ouch).
It’s been important for me to have a hobby that didn’t become synonymous with content creation. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy posting my creations online, but none of my mini projects have suffered under a mental pressure to create them on a schedule to be posted. They’ve been a manifestation of surplus energy and moments shared between my partner and I. Switching between hobbies has been a healthy experience for me.
For the future, I definitely want to paint more busts and try working with an airbrush. I’ve got so much to learn and I’m excited to do it at my own pace. I hope you’ll enjoy the gallery. Till next time!
